Will Hayler and Tony Paley, Friday 13th July 2012 10:58
Will Hayler: One of the rising forces in Irish racing, Andrew Oliver last sent out a winner in Britain when taking a Southwell seller back in 2007 but his name is one to remember and Sendmylovetorose maintained her unbeaten record with a gutsy win in the Cherry Hinton Stakes.
Talk can sometimes be of the following year's 1,000 Guineas after this Group Two contest, but the nimble and precocious Sendmylovetorose is unlikely to prove a contender for the Classics. Instead she might even a possible for something like the Nunthorpe Stakes, where she will get a huge weight allowance as a two-year-old filly.
Sangfroid called it wrong/right in the six-furlong handicap. There are few stables whose 'form' is as hard to read as Mark Johnston's and the trainer ended a rotten run of form with victory from Fulbright.
Meanwhile at York, the Group Three Summer Stakes has gone to German raider Gracia Directa, overlooked as usual by punters at 14-1 despite winning a Listed race on her latest start. When will we learn that we ignore these foreign raiders at our peril?
As feared, the rain did reach Newmarket last night with 18mm of rain falling at the track overnight and the going is now officially 'soft'.
Chepstow got even more rain and have been forced to abandon their evening meeting, while Hamilton's card had already fallen and the meeting at the same track scheduled for Saturday must also be in doubt with the course still waterlogged in places.
One thing I have learnt about Newmarket's July meeting in the past is never to be too dogmatic about supposed draw advantages but after everything that drifted to the far side ended up getting beaten (Red Cadeaux boo hoo) and after stalls one and two led the field home in the closing sprint handicap against the rail, surely jockeys will be heading as quickly as they can for the stands' side.
Piri Wango's (1.50) draw in stall five must be a positive and I hope he has a very good chance for a canny stable in the six-furlong handicap. You can read more about my thoughts on the other televised races here.
I was entertained to read in another newspaper over my cornflakes that my Falmouth Stakes fancy Golden Lilac "performs particularly well under Maxime Guyon with a 83% strike rate". By my reckoning, she's won five of the six times Guyon has been on board, but also won on the only time she wasn't. By my reckoning that means she has a 100% record when he's not on board. Lies, damn lies and statistics.
Those looking for a bet away from Newmarket might want to consider Little Rocky (4.35) at Newbury. He loves soft ground and has produced two solid efforts so far this season in contests more competitive than this.
It's all to play for on the final day with ToffeeDan1 in the lead.
This week's prize is a pair of tickets to Sandown for one of their summer music nights, on Wednesday 25 July, when there will be a performance by the opera / musical superstar Alfie Boe. The track's press release reports that he "has spent much of his career on Broadway where he worked alongside Baz Luhrmann on the production of La Boheme. He has also starred in many musicals including the renowned Les Miserables, recently playing Jean Valjean at the 25th Anniversary Concerts at the O2." Those who don't win can buy tickets here.
Today, we'd like your tips, please, for these races: 1.50 Newmarket, 3.45 York and 5.20 Newmarket.
As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. You can join in for the first time today but will do so from a starting point of -9.00, having missed the first three days of the competition.
In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day. So get your tips in early today.
